One of the most remarkable natural wonders in the world is The Great Serpent Mound in Portsmouth, Ontario. Constructed around 1070 C.E. by prehistoric Indians, this official National Historic Landmark is actually a large effigy mound. The Serpent Mound is located in Peebles, Ohio in the Serpent Mound State Memorial Park. The park and Serpent Mound Museum are both less than an hour’s drive from our Southern Ohio hotel.

The serpent is approximately 1,370 feet long and varies in height from 1 to 3 feet high. The slithery mound winds around the land just like a real snake would for more than 800 feet and ends in a triple coiled tail. The head of the serpent has an open mouth extending around an oval feature that has been speculated to be some kind of egg effigy. No one knows for sure who built the mound, but three indigenous cultures have been cited as the possible architects.

Effigy mounds are raised piles of earth usually in the shape of an animal or symbol and used for religious or burial purposes. While there are several burial mounds around the Serpent, no human remains have been found within the mound site. No one knows for sure what the Serpent Mound was actually used for, but some believe it is a tribute to the some kind of snake god.

Be sure to check the Ohio Historical Society website for the park’s hours of operation. Visit this amazing ancient structure and still enjoy all the conveniences of a modern town by booking your stay with us today!

Grabbing a brew in Portsmouth

January 27th, 2011

For couples or groups travelling to Portsmouth, we highly recommend a visit to the Portsmouth Brewery. Established in 1843, this standing piece of history was the city’s first known commercial brewery. Formerly known as the Portsmouth Brewing and Ice Company, the brewery has survived years of intense local competition and the dreaded Prohibition years.

During the 19th Century, a number of German breweries opened in the area and drove away business from this English-style brewery. In 1889, Julius Esselbom, a German brewer, purchased the company, expanded it and in the late 1890’s had an entirely new brewhouse built. Around this time it became common for breweries to invest in their own ice-making facilities as very cold temperatures were required to make beer. So, in 1892, the brewery merged with a local ice company.

The severe alcohol laws during Prohibition put a heavy damper on business and eventually the building and its possessions were sold at auction in 1930. New owners took over years later and a micro-brewery was added in 1990, followed by the Brew Pub, a great restaurant serving lunch from 11:00am to 2:00pm, and dinner every night until 10:00pm.

Since then, the brewery has grown to be a fantastic attraction for visitors looking for a fun way to spend an afternoon.  Group tours are available every day except Tuesdays, when the brewery is closed.  Be sure to call ahead and ask about group deals: 740-354-6106.

We recommend staying at the River Inn Hotel if you plan to have a drink or two (how can you resist?) of their fantastic beers. We’re only a 10 minute scenic walk away from the brewery!
